Your automatic transmission has a fit-for-operation lifespan. In simple terms, this means that over time, wear and tear will take its toll, and at some point, it will need either repair or reconditioning. This is the unavoidable reality of all mechanical systems—nothing lasts forever, especially under constant use.
There’s an important distinction between a transmission repair and a recondition. A repair involves identifying and replacing only the specific failed or damaged parts that are affecting the transmission’s performance. It’s a targeted fix that restores function but doesn’t address all internal wear. Since not every component is inspected or replaced during a repair, it’s considered a partial solution aimed at getting you back on the road.
Depending on the fault, repairs may not always be possible, but when they are, they typically cost significantly less than a full recondition. Many repairs can be done without removing the transmission from the vehicle, although in some cases, removal is necessary.
Reconditioning, on the other hand, is a full overhaul. The transmission is removed, completely stripped down, and every internal part is inspected. Worn or wearable items are replaced, and the unit is rebuilt to a standard that’s considered “as good as new.”
Transmission repairs are often possible based on the findings of a thorough diagnostic assessment. Once the specific issues are identified, repairs can target only the faulty components, offering a cost-effective solution to restore your vehicle’s performance without the need for a full rebuild.
These repairs are all based on the results of diagnostics, which help us pinpoint the exact problem and determine whether a repair is a viable solution. If the damage is more severe or widespread, a full reconditioning may be needed to ensure long-term performance.
Reconditioning your automatic transmission isn’t just about replacing a few worn parts, it’s a complete, methodical rebuild designed to restore reliability, performance, and longevity. At Ron Hill Automatics, every step is carried out with precision, using our extensive expertise and commitment to doing things right the first time.
Step 1: Comprehensive Diagnostics
Before anything comes apart, we run a full diagnostic assessment. This is critical, it pinpoints the exact cause of transmission issues so we’re not just patching symptoms. With clear fault data, we can plan a proper repair path that delivers long-term results.
Step 2: Transmission Removal
If reconditioning is the right path forward, the transmission is removed from the vehicle. This step clears the way for a complete internal assessment.
Step 3: Internal Assessment
With the unit out, we completely disassemble the transmission. Every single component, gear sets, clutch packs, shafts, bushings, valve body, casing, and more, is thoroughly inspected for wear, damage, and suitability for reuse. Any issues identified at this stage inform what will be addressed during the reconditioning process.
Step 4: Reconditioning
This stage involves a comprehensive rebuild of the transmission, aimed at restoring it to factory performance and reliability. Every part of the unit is cleaned, measured, and reassembled with precision, using strict tolerances and tested procedures. The process focuses on correcting all wear-related issues, resolving internal faults, and ensuring consistent hydraulic and mechanical function. It’s not just about making it work, it’s about bringing the transmission back to a condition where it operates as efficiently and reliably as it did when new.
Step 5: Cooling System Flush
The vehicle’s transmission cooler and lines are flushed thoroughly to remove contaminants that could compromise the new build. A clean system is key to the transmission’s longevity.
Step 6: Reinstallation & Calibration
Once the rebuild is complete and everything’s spotless, the transmission is reinstalled. Fresh fluid is added, electronic resets are performed, and the vehicle is road-tested under real driving conditions to confirm proper operation.
The End Result
A transmission that’s been through a rigorous, transparent process, fully reconditioned, road-tested, and ready for thousands of kilometres ahead. No shortcuts, no surprises. Just honest, skilled workmanship from a team that backs what they build.
Be Careful!
When a transmission fails and depending on the nature of the failure, will contaminate its cooling system circuit. The internal veins of an oil cooler core will trap debris, simply blowing air through the lines, pumping a few litres of oil or degreaser through the lines will not completely remove the mess. There may be a lot of debris still in the cooling system that has to be removed and if not removed with damage your newly reconditioned transmission.
RHA has a “Hot Flush” cooler flushing machine to carry this out properly. The machine uses transmission fluid heated to 85 degrees, with an intermittent reverse cycle pulse.
At 85 degrees this simulates typical trans operating temperatures, and when combined with a high flow rate and a reverse cycle pulse, removes all lodged debris from the system.
Giving RHA technicians confidence that their hard work will not be tarnished due to contaminates from the original failure.
When you have transmission work done with us, you can drive away with confidence knowing your investment is protected by our Peace of Mind Warranty. We stand behind the quality of our parts and the skill of our workmanship, offering clear and honest warranty coverage on all transmission repairs and reconditioning services.
For transmission reconditioning, our warranty covers 12 months or 20,000 km—whichever comes first. This warranty is a direct result of the detailed process involved in reconditioning. From full disassembly and cleaning to the replacement of worn components and precision reassembly, every step is designed to ensure long-term reliability. We don’t just fix the problem—we reset the transmission’s operating life.
For transmission repairs, we offer 6 months or 10,000 km of coverage. It’s important to note that this warranty applies only to the specific parts and workmanship directly involved in the repair, not the transmission as a whole.
To keep things clear and transparent, you’ll receive a written warranty statement at the time of your reconditioning job, outlining exactly what’s covered.
Our goal is simple: give you peace of mind and stand by the work we do—no surprises, no grey areas.
