When Factory Calibration Falls Short

THE RISKS OF HEAVY-DUTY USE ON A STOCK TRANSMISSION

Clutch Slippage

At times factory hydraulic calibration may not apply enough clamping force during heavy towing or sustained load. This can allow clutch packs to slip during gear changes, generating excessive heat and rapidly wearing friction material.

Excessive Operating Temperatures

A stock valve body can limit how effectively the cooling system and internal fluid circuits are utilised. This limits the transmission’s ability to shed heat, allowing operating temperatures to rise and increasing the risk of heat related damage.

Torque Converter Failure

Without correct balance between apply and release pressures, the torque converter clutch can slip excessively under load. Prolonged slip accelerates internal wear within the converter, increasing the likelihood of premature torque converter failure and system contamination.

A valve body upgrade modifies the transmission’s hydraulic control system by recalibrating oil flow and pressure delivery. This can be achieved by resizing clutch apply orifices in the valve body separator plate and revising pressure regulator and clutch control valve spring rates.

These changes increase available line pressure and clutch apply pressure, allowing clutch packs to engage faster and with greater clamping force. Reduced slip during gear changes lowers heat generation and improves torque transfer under load.
Hydraulic circuit refinements also increase internal lubrication and cooler flow rates.
