Transmission Cooling Systems

MANAGING OPERATING TEMPERATURES

When Factory Cooling Isn’t Enough

Upgrading your automatic transmission cooling system helps regulate operating temperatures within an optimal range, protecting the transmission from overheating and heat related wear. By preventing damaging temperature spikes, it supports reliability and long-term performance, particularly when towing, carrying heavy loads, running increased engine power, or operating in demanding driving conditions.

Key benefits:

  • Reduces overheating during towing and heavy use
  • Maintains optimal operating temperatures
  • Minimises premature failures and costly repairs by reducing heat related stress

Excess Temperature Causes Transmission Failure

Why Heat Is a Threat to Your Transmission

Transmission Fluid Breaks Down

Automatic transmissions rely on fluid to control pressure, lubrication, and cooling. Excess heat degrades the fluid’s additives, reducing its ability to protect internal components and regulate shifts.

Accelerates Internal Wear

When operating temperatures rise, seals harden, clutch materials glaze, and valve body components wear faster. This accelerates internal deterioration and shortens the transmission’s service life.

Reduce Performance and Reliability

Sustained high temperatures can force the transmission into limp mode or cause sudden loss of drive. In severe cases, overheating leads to complete transmission failure and unplanned breakdown.

The RHA Pro Solution

Drive With Confidence

An upgraded transmission cooler typically features larger surface area and increased fluid capacity, allowing for more efficient heat dissipation. This means that heat generated during operation is effectively transferred away from the transmission fluid, preventing it from reaching damaging temperature levels

ANSWERS AND INFORMATION

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a larger transmission cooler affect the efficiency of components behind it, such as the radiator?

When designed and installed correctly, a transmission cooler upgrade does not negatively affect radiator or engine cooling performance. Cooler size, airflow, mounting position, and fluid routing are all considered to ensure adequate airflow is maintained across all heat exchangers. The goal is to manage transmission temperatures without compromising overall cooling efficiency, which is why application specific design and correct installation are critical.
No. While towing vehicles benefit greatly, cooler upgrades are also valuable for any automatic 4WD vehicle due to the benefits of reduced operating temps.
A correctly designed and professionally installed transmission cooling upgrade does not automatically void your vehicle’s warranty. Under Australian Consumer Law, a manufacturer cannot deny warranty coverage simply because an aftermarket component has been fitted. However, if a failure is directly caused by a non compliant or incorrectly installed modification, warranty coverage for that specific issue may be affected. This is why cooler selection, installation method, and fluid routing are critical. At RHA, upgrades are installed to complement the factory cooling system and are matched to the vehicle and transmission to avoid interference with normal operation. If warranty considerations apply, they are discussed clearly before any work is carried out.
In most cases, a transmission cooler upgrade is completed within a single day. This allows time for correct installation, fluid checks, and verification that the system is operating as intended. If any additional work or vehicle specific considerations are identified, this will be discussed with you beforehand.
Because towing capacity does not mean unlimited thermal capacity. Manufacturers rate vehicles to tow 3.5 tonnes under controlled test conditions and within compliance targets. To meet fuel efficiency and emissions requirements, modern transmissions are designed to operate at higher temperatures than older vehicles. This improves efficiency, but it reduces the safety margin for heat when the vehicle is worked hard.
When towing heavy loads in real conditions such as long highway runs, hills, traffic, hot weather, or with added weight and accessories, the transmission produces far more heat than the factory cooling system was designed to manage continuously. The result is elevated operating temperatures, faster fluid breakdown, and increased internal wear, even though the vehicle is technically within its towing rating.
A cooling upgrade simply restores that missing thermal margin.
A well matched transmission cooler aims to keep operating temperatures within the optimal 60°C to 85°C range. Keeping temperatures in this window helps prevent fluid breakdown, reduce internal wear, and maintain consistent transmission performance, particularly under load or during towing.
