Upgrading your 4wd with a torque converter lock-up Control system offers control over your transmissions heat generation. In an automatic transmission, the torque converter is responsible for generating a significant portion of the heat, typically around 80-90% of the total heat produced.
This is because the torque converter relies on fluid dynamics to transfer power from the engine to the transmission, and during this process, the fluid inside the torque converter experiences friction and shear forces, leading to heat generation.
This heat production can be greatly reduced by manually commanding the converter clutch to its engaged state.
The manufacturer will program the converter clutch to engage as desired driving conditions are present, though will disengage the clutch when met with anything more than a slight incline or increasing of loads on the vehicle. A disengaged converter clutch = heat generation.
Another significant advantage is the ability to regulate engine braking. By selectively engaging the torque converter lock-up clutch, drivers can control engine braking during descents or deceleration, resulting in a more controlled and responsive driving experience, particularly beneficial when towing heavy loads or navigating steep terrain.
When the controller is activated, you can select mode 1 to automatically engage lock-up clutch at approx. 77kph + and disengage at approx. 74kph. This the set and forget function, this mode is what you will leave selected.
Mode 2 is a low-speed lock-up clutch engagement function, this will automatically engage the converter clutch at approx. 25kph + and disengage at approx. 20kph.
Mode 2 function can cause harsh shifting when the transmission is shifting through the lower gears and is only recommended for single gear selection when off roading or towing and the operator wishes to reduce heat generation or the benefit of engine braking at these lower speeds.
The lock-up controller can also be turned off for the user to revert to factory torque converter clutch function.
To achieve the desired control over a transmissions torque converter clutch, the installation of a manual override torque converter lock-up controller is required.
The circuit between the vehicle’s transmission control module and torque converter lock-up clutch is modified to incorporate the lock-up override module. The lock-up override module will also provide the vehicles transmission control module with the necessary data to ensure no faults arise due to its function.
Whether prioritising performance, fuel efficiency, or smoother operation, drivers can adjust torque converter engagement to suit their preferences and driving conditions, optimising the overall driving experience.
This upgrade also contributes to prolonging the lifespan of the transmission by reducing wear and tear associated with excessive slippage and heat buildup.
